The Virgin Suicides

Director: Sofia Coppola | USA 2000 | 97 min | 35mm | English Original Version | with Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, James Woods

The tragic story of the suicide of five sisters. The Lisbon sisters, caught between their dreams full of longing and the dreary reality of conservative suburban life in the 1970s, grow up isolated from the rest of the world and the dangers their parents believe lurk within it. Their religious and overprotective parents want to keep the girls away from their male peers at all costs. Yet the boys of the same age across the street are not much different from most ordinary teenage boys. For them, girls are mystical, mysterious and inscrutable beings, which seems to be particularly true in the case of the five Lisbon sisters due to their inaccessibility. When the first sister takes her own life, it sets off a dark and uncanny series of events. With this debut feature, Sofia Coppola announced her singular vision, exploring the aesthetics of femininity while illuminating the interior lives of young women. An adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’s popular first novel, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES conjures the ineffable melancholy of teenage longing.
