Lotte Reiniger's earliest surviving fairy tale film, based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, premiered in Berlin in September 1921 and was well received by the press: “Delightfully cut silhouettes with fine, grotesque lines enliven the screen in a completely new, distinctive way. They are cut by Lotte Reiniger. A little too much title interrupts the lightness of this fairy tale.
