In July and August 2025, we are once again inviting you to a special workshop at the Kino im Blauen Salon: Anyone who has always wanted to know how analog film projection works will have the opportunity to experience the classic craft of cinema for themselves on two dates.
On July 5 and August 2, from 1 to 5 p.m., we will open the screening room - the secret place where the magic of film comes to life on analog 35mm projectors. Here we will provide a step-by-step introduction to the history and technology of analog film projection: from the various film formats and special materials to the careful handling of the film print. Participants will get hands-on and project in dissolve mode with two 35mm projectors - an experience that can hardly be surpassed in terms of uniqueness in times of digital overload.
Why all this? Because for us, analog projection is more than just technology or nostalgia. It stands for an aesthetic and cultural experience that is characterized by an unmistakable image aesthetic with grain and color. Analog projection is an independent field of art and culture that deserves to be preserved and passed on.
Our commitment is based on the spirit of Heinrich Klotz, the visionary founder of the HfG and the ZKM, who stated as early as 1992: “Just as painting will not be made superfluous by computer graphics, the concert grand piano will not be thrown away because there is a synthesizer.” Analog and digital are therefore not mutually exclusive, but enrich each other.
The workshop is aimed at all those interested in film - whether students, filmmakers or cineastes - who want to deepen their knowledge of classic cinema and learn how to use it.
