Wanda

Wanda

Director: Barbara Loden | USA 1970 | 103 min | 35mm | English Original Version | with Barbara Loden, Michael Higgins, Dorothy Shupenes

Wanda, who lives in Pennsylvania, is divorced by her husband and also fails to find a new job. By chance, she meets a man named Dennis in a bar and becomes involved in a crime he proposes. Watching the tragic and depressing story of this woman prompts reflection on people who cannot be easily categorized. Even after a single event has passed, life continues, and we cannot judge a person solely by isolated moments. Barbara Loden left behind this film as her first and only feature. Although it was well received by critics at the time, it was not a film presenting a progressive image of women, and some audiences found it uncomfortable. Since Loden’s death, however, the film has been the subject of more active discussion. Today, it is considered one of the best American independent films of the 1970s.
