When fish poisoning paralyzes crew and passengers on a trans-America flight, stewardess Elaine takes command. She is able to get ex-fighter pilot Ted Striker to take the controls of the plane, but Striker has been a mental wreck since his combat deployment in the war and suffers from a hellish fear of flying. An old war buddy is now supposed to guide Ted to a successful landing from the tower, but the two are at odds.
