The saiLento duo, consisting of pianist Reiko Emura and percussionist Shinichi Minami, provide the musical accompaniment to the silent film A Page of Madness (1926) by Teinosuke Kinugasa. Supporting film: Hands: The Life and Love of a Tender Sex (1928) by Stella F. Simon. The themed evening will be accompanied by pieces by Wolfgang Rihm, Toru Takemitsu, Robert Schumann and Tom Johnson.
The story of a woman who lives as a prisoner in a "madhouse" and is guarded by her husband, who temporarily works there. A cinematically surprisingly "modern" indictment of inhumane custody practices, whose oppressive intensity owes much to the impressive montage.
The use of human hands as characters in a dance inspired narrative are used to explore female experience and representation. By drawing upon experimental traditions found in international art, film, and photography movements of the 1920s, Simon transforms a simple melodramatic love story into an avant-garde feminist short film.
