Der Arzt Miles Bennell lebt und arbeitet in der idyllischen Kleinstadt Mill Valley, Kalifornien. Eines Tages besucht ihn seine Jugendfreundin Becky mit einem seltsamen Anliegen. Angeblich ist der Onkel ihrer Freundin nicht mehr er selbst. Miles untersucht den Fall, kann aber nichts Ungewöhnliches feststellen. In den folgenden Tagen kommen immer mehr Leute mit demselben Problem zu ihm. Er schickt sie zu dem Psychiater Manfred Kaufman, der die Ereignisse aber als Massenhysterie abtut.
Miles Bennell is a doctor who lives and works in the idyllic small town of Mill Valley, California. One day his childhood friend Becky visits him with a strange request. Allegedly, her friend’s uncle is no longer himself. Miles investigates the case, but finds nothing unusual. In the following days, more and more people come to him with the same problem. He sends them to the psychiatrist Manfred Kaufman, but he dismisses the events as simply mass hysteria. However, the truth of the matter proves to be a very sinister one.
